An Alamo Drafthouse has finally made it over to east Austin! A 6-screen theater with a family focus, the Mueller neighborhood petitioned Alamo to open a theater for years, including a “sit in” at another Alamo location. Neighbors bought out a theater at the Village location in 2014 to prove they were ready for their Drafthouse!

The Mueller location of the Drafthouse has several unique features. On the first floor of the building, the “Barrel o’ Fun” is a family friendly space with a stage, sound system, and big tables for events. During the day, games cover the bar areas in the carnival-themed room, and in the evening, the games are lifted on a pulley system to expose the bar, and the “rel” part of the word “barrel” goes dark, turning the space into the “Bar o’ Fun” for adults only.

On the second floor, there are theatrical movie posters covering the walls, and a mock-up of Devil’s Tower from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The seats recline in the theaters, a first for any Alamo location. The gender-neutral bathrooms, of which the final design was voted on by the public, are also a first at the Mueller location. All the projectors are digital.

The buildings are all managed by a facilities manager, who ensures everything runs smoothly. Since the building is rated Austin Green Building Level 3, expect to find some sustainability features as well. All the lights are LED. The bar is coated with a green product that doesn’t off-gas harmful chemicals. Since there are so many food options, they’ve taken steps to use almost all reusable cups, plates, and utensils for their food service. You won’t find bottled water here, only filtered water served in reusable cups. Food waste is also composted, to keep it out of the landfill. And of course, anything that is recyclable gets recycled.

The Alamo brand isn’t just a movie theater. It’s a conglomerate of several different companies, including Midnight Cowboy, Mondo Tees, and franchisees. Recently, they also started Neon, a new film distribution company. The first release from Neon is Colossal, with Anne Hathaway, and many more movies are on the way.

Check out and book your next movie experience!
